Art is... Popular Culture

Which movies and videos do you watch?

Which books do you like to read?

Do you play video games? Listen to music? Skateboard? Play a sport?

Who are the most interesting famous people or characters today? Why?

What forms from your everyday world do you like?

Baseball cards, skateboards, packaging, clothing, shoes.

How could you use on of those forms in your art to make a statement?

'Pop' Culture artists borrow and use images and items from current life to create new art.

Humor is often a part of their art.

Where did Roy Lichtenstein get his inspiration from?

Jeff Koons ballon animal sculptures are huge! They are made out of metal.

What is something you find visually interesting today?

Drawing with Shapes Video

The SHAPE APPROACH to drawing animals:

1. Look at the shape of your animal.
2. Draw the basic shapes.
3. Begin with an oval for the body.
4. Next add the head, neck, tail, face and details

The OUTLINE or CONTOUR APPROACH to drawing animals:
1. Look closely at your animal
2. Begin at the top of your animal's head.
3. Keep your eyes on the animal, and let your pencil move as your eyes move along with the edge of the shape of the animal. Sometimes it helps to keep your place on your animal with your finger as you look and draw.

Reflection:
What approach was your favorite? (Thumbs up thumbs down)

Do you have your own approach to drawing animals?

Where Do Artists Get Ideas

Learning to think like an artist means:
  • looking at things more closely than most people do.
  • finding beauty in everyday things and situations.
  • making new connections between different things and ideas.
  • going beyond ordinary ways of thinking and doing things.
  • looking at things in different ways in order to generate new perspectives.
  • taking risks and exposing yourself to possible failure.
  • arranging things in new and interesting ways.
  • working hard and at the edge of your potential.
  • persisting where others may give up.
  • concentrating your effort and attention for long periods of time
  • dreaming and fantasizing about things.
  • using old ideas to create new ideas and ways of seeing things.
  • doing something simply because it's interesting and personally challenging to do.

Creative Ways to View a Scene

  • Artists look for creative ways of viewing a scene and how different perspectives can change the message of a piece.

Sketch some ideas for something you could look through...

(Keyholes, windows, fence...)

Choose one and enlarge on a piece of paper

Lightly sketch out the rest of your scene with pencils.
Choose ONE Color and a dot of white and black.

Continue painting the landscape using variations of tints, shades, and tones of the chosen color. Choose a different brushes for different areas and textures.

Paint in the keyhole (or fencing) material using a mixture of black and white with a bit of the chosen hue. Add details with different values of this color. Share and discuss.

What is atmospheric perspective?
