Art Show

  What is an Art Show?

What is an art show?

What things do artists do to get ready for an art show?

They make art, select which artwork to show, find a location, they promote their show (tell people about it) and they talk about their art.

Art Show Slides

Curating is the act of selecting, organizing, and presenting objects for display.

  • Select a piece of art that you have worked on 2 or more art classes.

  • You work should be a piece that you are proud of creating.

  • Your art should be complete and be your personal best work.

We will organize our work by class, with each student having a special place to display their work (by their name).

We will prepare it for display in a later lesson on framing and our artist statement.

Tempera Portrait - Who Am I

  What do I think about?

What is important to me?

We know a self-portrait is a picture of what we look like. But there is so much more about us that is important!

Can you create a self-portrait that also shows what is important to you?

Marc Chagall painted this self-portrait. He wanted to show some of the things that were important to him.

What is he thinking about? Where did he place the things he was thinking about?

Tempera Paint Self-Portrait Video

If you are going to create a self-portrait ask yourself these questions.

- Where will you place your head?

- What shape will you draw first?

- What things will you include in your self-portrait to show what you think

Other tempera inspiration:

What animal are you?

Who Am I

Who I Am- Focusing on Faces

New Unit: Who I Am

*Face Maps
*What do I look like?
*My Favorite Things
*My Personality!

Lesson One: Focusing on Faces

Objectives:
Observe and discuss proportion in portraits
Make a face map

Today we are going to make a face map so that we can practice placing the eyes, nose and mouth on the face.

First, we begin with an oval for the face. Then we divide the face in half with a horizontal line. This helps us with eye placement.

Now, we will draw a vertical line down the center of the oval.
This will help us make our faces symmetrical, or the same on each side.

Third, we will draw a short line halfway between our  horizontal line and the bottom of the face.
This will be where the bottom of the nose is placed.

Finally, we will draw a slightly longer line between the nose line in the chin for the mouth.

Then you are ready to add your eyes, nose and mouth.

Drawing with Shapes

 Drawing from Observation

If you look closely at something, you can find the shapes.

Drawing with Shapes Video

The SHAPE APPROACH to drawing animals:

1. Look at the shape of your animal.
2. Draw the basic shapes.
3. Begin with an oval for the body.
4. Next add the head, neck, tail, face and details

The OUTLINE or CONTOUR APPROACH to drawing animals:
1. Look closely at your animal
2. Begin at the top of your animal's head.
3. Keep your eyes on the animal, and let your pencil move as your eyes move along with the edge of the shape of the animal. Sometimes it helps to keep your place on your animal with your finger as you look and draw.

Reflection:
What approach was your favorite? (Thumbs up thumbs down)

Do you have your own approach to drawing animals?

Nature's Beauty: Observing Nature Up Close

Nature's Beauty: Observing Nature Up Close

Create

1. Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

B. Investigation

Use observation and investigation in preparation for making a work of art.

Today we will learn to look carefully at flowers and leaves to discover the beautiful details in the natural world.

During this week, you can look for other natural objects that you might like to observe closely and draw.

Have you ever looked at a flower up close?

What did you notice that you didn't see from far away?

Here is a painting from far away of a field of poppies

Here is a painting close up of a single poppy

Do you think this artist could paint this flower from memory?
Or would the artist need to see the flower in real life?

This artist, Georgia O'Keefe would study flowers in real life so she could notice all the lines, shapes and colors.

Some artists like to observe nature from a distance, far away

Some artists like to observe nature up close

Which way do you like to observe nature?

Other artists who work with boxes

Mark Dion is a contemporary artist who explores our curiosity. A shed packed with hundreds of small boxes, containers, and tins – each filled with old trinkets, toys, debris, or dried plants. Few visitors know that you can enter and open any box (do it!) You are invited in and are welcome to take out the boxes and look inside.

Memory boxes can be all shapes and sizes. Objects inside bring about the senses of sight, touch, smell or sound will evoke some of the strongest memories.

Each box has an object or several objects that are waiting for discovery.

Artist Ibrahim Mahama transforms materials and found objects to explore themes.

Ibrahim lives and works in Ghana.

As you watch this clip:
What were the boxes in this artwork originally used for?
What doe Ibrahim compare the boxes to?

Ibrahim creates walls and installations constructed in common materials. He often works with found objects, transforming them and giving them new meaning.
