Tempera Portrait - Who Am I

  What do I think about?

What is important to me?

We know a self-portrait is a picture of what we look like. But there is so much more about us that is important!

Can you create a self-portrait that also shows what is important to you?

Marc Chagall painted this self-portrait. He wanted to show some of the things that were important to him.

What is he thinking about? Where did he place the things he was thinking about?

If you are going to create a self-portrait ask yourself these questions.

- Where will you place your head?

- What shape will you draw first?

- What things will you include in your self-portrait to show what you think

Who Am I

Who I Am- Focusing on Faces

New Unit: Who I Am

*Face Maps
*What do I look like?
*My Favorite Things
*My Personality!

Lesson One: Focusing on Faces

Objectives:
Observe and discuss proportion in portraits
Make a face map

Today we are going to make a face map so that we can practice placing the eyes, nose and mouth on the face.

First, we begin with an oval for the face. Then we divide the face in half with a horizontal line. This helps us with eye placement.

Now, we will draw a vertical line down the center of the oval.
This will help us make our faces symmetrical, or the same on each side.

Third, we will draw a short line halfway between our  horizontal line and the bottom of the face.
This will be where the bottom of the nose is placed.

Finally, we will draw a slightly longer line between the nose line in the chin for the mouth.

Then you are ready to add your eyes, nose and mouth.

Portrait Collage

 We Belong Together

Create

2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.

A. Skill Acquisition

Explore uses of materials and tools to create works of art or design.

Last week we started exploring how artists get ideas.

We spent some time looking at flowers, leaves and birds, because artists look more closely at things than most people do.

Another way artists get ideas are finding beauty in everyday things and situations. Like the people who are important to them.

All people have other people they are close to and care about.

We share our lives with them in different ways.
Important moments like the birth of a new baby.

When we spend time together, like at school.

We create memories together, what is happening in this picture?

As artists we share our lives with others.

Our memories?

Who we are and what makes us special?

Our family and friends?

Big Ideas

1. All people have others they are close too and care about.

2. As artists we can share ourselves and our feelings for others.

People enjoy spending time with their friends.

Today you might choose to make artwork about one of your friends.

What do you like to do with your friend?

What do you know about your friend?

Can you make a portrait of your friend by remembering what they look like?

Remember a portrait is a picture of a person.
