Where Do Artists Get Ideas

Learning to think like an artist means:
  • looking at things more closely than most people do.
  • finding beauty in everyday things and situations.
  • making new connections between different things and ideas.
  • going beyond ordinary ways of thinking and doing things.
  • looking at things in different ways in order to generate new perspectives.
  • taking risks and exposing yourself to possible failure.
  • arranging things in new and interesting ways.
  • working hard and at the edge of your potential.
  • persisting where others may give up.
  • concentrating your effort and attention for long periods of time
  • dreaming and fantasizing about things.
  • using old ideas to create new ideas and ways of seeing things.
  • doing something simply because it's interesting and personally challenging to do.

Creative Ways to View a Scene

  • Artists look for creative ways of viewing a scene and how different perspectives can change the message of a piece.

Sketch some ideas for something you could look through...

(Keyholes, windows, fence...)

Choose one and enlarge on a piece of paper

Lightly sketch out the rest of your scene with pencils.
Choose ONE Color and a dot of white and black.

Continue painting the landscape using variations of tints, shades, and tones of the chosen color. Choose a different brushes for different areas and textures.

Paint in the keyhole (or fencing) material using a mixture of black and white with a bit of the chosen hue. Add details with different values of this color. Share and discuss.

What is atmospheric perspective?

Illustrated Manuscript 4th - 5th

Long ago books were copied by hand.  Meaning, a person would re-write the book, slowly and carefully.  Besides writing all the words, they would also add drawings.

They would work hard, using calligraphy, to make the pages look like art.

Usually at the beginning of each page, the scribe, would start with a huge letter.

They would sometimes add drawings inside and around the letter.
